Rutherglen Golf Club’s History

Then & Now

Rutherglen is 3 hours from Melbourne, 30 minutes from Wangaratta, Yarrawonga, Albury, & Beechworth. Also just 10 minutes away is the mighty Murray River and Corowa.

Then …

The Rutherglen Golf Club was formed in 1900 and initially the course was on Quarry Hill, now the site of the High School. The first recorded club championships were held in 1907. Regularly timetables events began in 1914 with a series of monthly handicap events.

The first clubhouse was built in 1916. The decision to introduce Sunday golf was hotly debated over many years before it was introduced in 1932. In 1926 the annual Meeting proposed the club seek permission to move to the Rutherglen Park where 13 holes could be set up without interfering with the trees. Approval was obtained and a 10 hole course was laid out. The first season on the new course began in 1927.

After the second world war, the club steadily rebuilt membership and new events were introduced. In 1950 additional holes were added to provide a 12 hole course, in 1965 the 18 hole course finally opened.

Successful members include, Louise Briers (nee Hawking) who became a national amateur women’s champion and a manager of ladies teams travelling overseas. John Lindsay began at the club as a junior and later became a well-known golf administrator as well as Victorian Amateur Champion in 1968 and 1970. James McLean qualified for the US Men’s Tour and Leah Hart has qualified for the US Ladies Tour. Rutherglen is a successful club by any standards.

The groundskeeping is done by volunteers who do a spectactular job.

We recommend a visit to Grace. Bar + Eatery for a yummy morning coffee & a treat or a delicious evening meal with a cheeky wine. Pickles Sisters Cafe is also another highly recommended restaurant right in the heart of Rutherglen.

Perhaps you are looking to pamper yourself (or looking for something for your wife to do while you play), a visit to Silken Skin Spa is exactly what you need. Don’t forget to book in or you might miss out.

After your round of golf, before you leave town, call into our local butcher & have a look at their vast selection of fresh meat. Don’t forget to stop into our local IGA too and pick up some of our local Beechworth Honey.

The club is still to this day solely run by a strong team of volunteers. They put in countless hours to ensure the club is a place that young and old can come to socialise & play golf if they wish.

The golf here is excellent and we welcome visitors daily. The best part is you don’t even need to book a tee time.

In early 2024 our course changed and we took two of our par 5 holes off the map. This gave us the opportunity to add in a couple of short par 3 holes which have created a whole new challenge for golfers.

The feedback from this change has been very positive.

We look forward to hosting you at the Rutherglen Golf Club soon.
